Family drama in Gujarat as BJP fields Saas-Bahu from the same constituency

Soon after BJP announced its fifth list of candidates for the upcoming elections, a drama of sorts erupted in the constituency, and within a family. Pitted against each other were a daughter-in-law and a mother-in-law. The former won. As anticipated, this ruffled quite a few feathers. BJP has fielded Suman Chauhan from Kaalol. She is the daughter-in-law of sitting MP from Panchmahals Prabhatsinh Chauhan and wife of his son Pravinsinh.

She is also a member of district panchayat. Pravinsinh’s mother Ranilaben was Prabatsinh’s first wife and had passed away five years ago. The MP’s second wife Rangeshwariben too had sought a ticket from the constituency. Prabhatsinh married Rangeshwariben four years ago after which his relationship with five sons and three daughters is said to have hit a rough patch.

On Friday, sources said Rangeshwariben had expressed displeasure with the party after being overlooked for election ticket in favour of her daughter-in-law. She allegedly threatened Suman and even posted the threat on social media. Not just this, she even dared her husband to campaign in Kaalol for Suman. Sources added the party must have evaluated the winning chances of both the women.

“Suman is a native of the village, Mehlol, and has better chances of winning the elections. Her husband Pravinsinh is a farmer. People feel the couple is more connected to the grassroots and hence supports them. On the other hand, Rangeshwariben is an outsider. She does not enjoy the kind of support that Suman enjoys,” said sources. Pravinsinh said, “We are happy that my wife has got the ticket.” Asked about his comment on the open war declared by his mother against his wife, he said, “We have no relations with Rangeshwariben. She is not my mother.”
