After the unlikely announcement by the BJP of their Presidential candidate of Ram Nath Kovind, the Bihar governor, that took the opposition to the root, the opposition has now fielded their choice for the upcoming Presidential Elections with the prominent Dalit face, former Speaker of Lok Sabha, Meira Kumar. Being a prominent Dalit face and the daughter of the Former Deputy PM, Meira Kumar is been the choice for the UPA.
The name was seal after the BJP trumped the opposition with Ram Nath Kovind. UPA is now betting high on Meira Kumar name to sail through their sinking ship in the battle for the country’s top job.
Meira Kumar is a five-time Member of Parliament who was elected unopposed as the first woman Speaker of Lok Sabha and served from 2009 to 2014. She is a lawyer and a former diplomat
This decision was taken in a crucial meeting of opposition parties which was attended by leaders of 17 parties.
Prominent among those who attended the meeting held in the Parliament House Library were Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh and senior party leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge and Ahmed Patel, besides NCP’s Sharad Pawar and RJD’s Lalu Prasad.
