Go Digit Listing: Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s ₹2.5 Cr Investment Grows to ₹10 Cr

Go Digit General Insurance’s stock market debut on May 23 has yielded remarkable returns for celebrity couple Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, who had invested in the insurer back in February 2020. The couple’s investment in the company has multiplied four-fold, with the share price surpassing the Rs 300 mark, significantly enhancing the value of their holdings.

According to the insurance company’s red herring prospectus (RHP), ace cricketer Virat Kohli bought 266,667 equity shares at Rs 75 each, totaling Rs 2 crore, while actor Anushka Sharma purchased 66,667 shares for Rs 50 lakh, bringing their combined investment to Rs 2.5 crore. As the share price now exceeds Rs 300, Kohli’s investment has surged to Rs 8 crore, and Sharma’s to Rs 2 crore, making their combined shares worth Rs 10 crore.

The Prem Watsa-backed Go Digit’s public issue included a fresh issuance of shares worth Rs 1,125 crore and an offer-for-sale (OFS) of up to 5.48 crore shares, amounting to Rs 1,489.65 crore by its promoters and existing shareholders. Founded in December 2016, Go Digit offers a broad spectrum of insurance products such as health, travel, and property insurance, and has introduced 74 active products across its various business lines.

Prior to its issue opening on May 14, Go Digit, backed by Fairfax, raised around Rs 1,176 crore from anchor investors, including Fidelity, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), and hedge fund Bay Pond Partners. The company allocated 4.32 crore equity shares to 56 funds at Rs 272 each, the upper price band.

This successful investment by Kohli and Sharma is part of a trend where sports stars and celebrities back companies that subsequently go public. For example, Sachin Tendulkar-backed Azad Engineering went public in December 2023, with Tendulkar’s investment growing six-fold after the stock’s impressive listing. Tendulkar had acquired 4.3 lakh shares at Rs 114.10 each in March 2023, and the stock listed on December 28 at Rs 720.
