IIT Kharagpur Student Found ‘Stabbed and Shot’, Second Forensic Report Reveals, 2 Years After Alleged ‘Suicide’

In a chilling revelation, the semi-decomposed body of Faizan Ahmed, a 23-year-old mechanical engineering student from IIT-Kharagpur, was discovered on October 14, 2022, in Room no. C-205 of Lala Lajpat Rai Hostel, an accommodation that was not his own. Initial investigations by the police and the first postmortem conducted at Midnapore Medical College the following day failed to capture critical details, as no videography of his injuries was performed. Despite early claims by his family that Faizan had been murdered, the first report left many questions unanswered, suspecting possible poisoning without definitive proof.
Two years later, a breakthrough came with a second forensic report ordered by the Calcutta High Court. Conducted on May 27, 2023, at the Kolkata Police Morgue, this postmortem revealed a different and far more violent cause of death. Dr. A.K. Gupta, a retired professor of forensic medicine, noted a gunshot wound on the upper left side of Faizan’s neck and a stab wound on the right side, establishing that Faizan was brutally murdered. Additionally, the right temporal bone of his skull was missing, consistent with the state of his body as found in 2022.
The court had intervened after Faizan’s family continued to push for justice, leading to the exhumation of his remains from Dibrugarh, Assam, in March 2023. The Calcutta High Court had appointed Dr. Gupta to reassess the case, culminating in the discovery that contradicted earlier suspicions of poisoning and pointed towards a homicide.
As the case now awaits a hearing before Justice Amrita Sinha’s bench, following multiple reassignments from Justice Jay Sengupta and earlier from Justice Mantha, the final report by Dr. Gupta is anticipated later this month. This report is expected to shed more light on the exact circumstances of Faizan Ahmed’s tragic death, potentially steering the investigation towards accountability and justice for the young student.
