Pawan Singh, BJP’s Asansol Candidate, Withdraws from Lok Sabha Race Amidst Controversy

In the face of mounting backlash surrounding his nomination for the Asansol Lok Sabha seat. Bhojpuri actor-singer Pawan Singh took to Twitter in the afternoon to formally declare his withdrawal from the impending election. In a heartfelt message expressed in Hindi. Singh conveyed his sincere thanks to the BJP leadership for placing their trust in him and officially announcing him as the candidate for Asansol. However, he cryptically alluded to unforeseen reasons that would hinder his ability to actively participate in the electoral race.

BJP’s Calculated Decision Amid Pawan Singh Controversy

Amidst significant criticism directed at the BJP for choosing Bihar-born singer Pawan Singh. Aged 38, for the race, the decision triggered a furor of objections. Particularly as detractors highlighted Singh’s discography, replete with songs making offensive comments about Bengali women. Insiders within the BJP were aware of the ensuing social media uproar and anticipated the potential harm Singh’s candidature might inflict on the party’s chances of winning Asansol. Consequently, they decided to strategically remove him from the race. And Singh was informed of this decision before he publicly announced his withdrawal.

As of now, the political landscape in the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency is dominated by Trinamool Congress’s Shatrughan Sinha. Who clinched a resounding victory in the 2022 bypoll. The dynamic shift in representation unfolded after the departure of the charismatic singer-politician Babul Supriyo. Notably, Supriyo had successfully secured the seat for the BJP in both the 2014 and 2019 general elections. Establishing himself as a prominent political figure. However, a noteworthy twist occurred as Supriyo switched allegiance to the Trinamool Congress. Paving the way for Sinha to assume the mantle of representing Asansol in the Lok Sabha.

Following Singh’s public announcement, Trinamool’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee attributed the withdrawal to the indomitable spirit of the people of West Bengal. Additionally, party leader Derek O’Brien injected a touch of humor into the situation, quipping, “This is Khela Hobe even before the khela begins.”
