“Modi Slams Pakistan for ‘Terror Games’ in Kargil, Backs Agnipath Scheme as Key Reform”

Marking the 25th anniversary of India’s victory against Pakistan in the Kargil War, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a gathering of serving and retired Army officers at the War Memorial in Drass, where he emphasized that Pakistan continues to rely on terrorism and proxy wars to remain relevant, despite its historical failures.

Speaking from a location where “terror masters can hear me directly,” Modi assured that India’s armed forces would decisively crush any terrorist activities and give the enemy a powerful response. Remembering the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Kargil War, he stated that their valor belongs to the entire nation, transcending political boundaries.

Modi criticized previous governments for neglecting defense reforms, highlighting that in the past decade, India’s defense sector has become more self-sufficient, with increased domestic procurement and a significant portion of the research and development budget allocated to the private sector. He praised the Indian defense leadership for identifying over 5,000 items, including weapons, that will no longer require importation. The Prime Minister also addressed the Agnipath scheme, labeling it a “necessary reform” aimed at maintaining a youthful and battle-ready military force. He lamented that prior committees lacked the will to tackle the challenge of an aging force and criticized those who politicized this vital national security issue. Modi accused detractors of being responsible for defense sector scams and impeding the progress of India’s air force capabilities.

Asserting the significance of the Agnipath scheme, he highlighted its role in empowering the youth to serve the nation while taking a swipe at those who mislead the youth and falsely promised One Rank One Pension, which his government implemented. Looking ahead, Modi expressed optimism for Jammu and Kashmir’s future following the revocation of its special status under Article 370, underscoring infrastructure and tourism growth and noting the return of Muharram taziya processions in Srinagar.

He reiterated his government’s commitment to Ladakh’s welfare, detailing efforts to enhance all-weather connectivity, such as the commencement of work on the Shinkhun La Tunnel. Highlighting the expansion of Ladakh’s budget from Rs 1,100 crore to Rs 6,000 crore over five years, Modi affirmed the government’s dedication to improving the quality of life for the region’s residents.
