“Google Doodle for International Women’s Day 2024: A Quilt of Progress”

The Google Doodle celebrated International Women’s Day, highlighting the strides made toward gender equality, coinciding with the United Nations’ inaugural celebration of the day in 1975.

March 8th commemorates early Women’s Day demonstrations in Saint Petersburg and New York City, advocating for gender equality, fair employment, voting rights, and public office access. Illustrated by Doodle artist Sophie Diao, the Doodle emphasized contemporary IWD marches’ focus on gender and racial wage gaps, reproductive rights, and combating violence against women.

Recognized annually as a pivotal date, International Women’s Day serves to celebrate women’s achievements, promote gender equality discussions, advocate for progress, and mobilize resources for women-centric initiatives.

Symbolic colors associated with the day—purple for justice, green for hope, and white for purity—underscore its significance. Additionally, “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, explores themes of race, gender, and identity in early 20th-century South, further highlighting the ongoing struggle for equality.
