West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee delivered a stern message to leaders of her ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday, warning them that without the support of the people, they would be left with no standing.

This caution came amidst the backdrop of turmoil in Sandeshkhali, where allegations of land grabbing, sexual assault, and exploitation involving local TMC leaders have escalated tensions. Speaking at a government distribution event in Purulia district, Banerjee emphasized the importance of staying connected with the electorate, reminding TMC members that their positions were contingent upon popular support.

In response to the recent controversies in Sandeshkhali, where some TMC leaders have been removed from their posts and others arrested, Banerjee urged unity and accountability within the party ranks. The escalating situation in Sandeshkhali, particularly concerning the alleged actions of TMC leaders like Sheikh Shahjahan, has fueled unrest, with villagers demanding justice and arrests.

Despite attempts at damage control by the TMC, including the removal of accused leaders and arrests, the situation remains tense. Criticism from opposition parties, including the BJP and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, has further heightened scrutiny on the government’s handling of the crisis.

Meanwhile, the arrest of ISF leader Nawsad Siddique and the prevention of a Congress delegation from visiting Sandeshkhali have added to the political tensions surrounding the issue.

Amidst allegations and arrests, the situation in Sandeshkhali underscores the delicate balance of power and accountability in West Bengal’s political landscape.
