The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sent notices to actor Shah Rukh Khan, his company Red Chillies Entertainment, and Netflix after IRS officer Sameer Wankhede filed a defamation case against them. He claimed that their series “The Ba*ds of Bollywood” damaged his reputation.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav sent summons to Gauri Khan’s company Red Chillies Entertainment, Netflix, X (formerly Twitter), Google, Meta, RPG Lifestyle Media, and an unnamed person (referred to as John Doe) in the defamation case. He asked all of them to submit their replies within seven days.
The court did not issue any temporary ban on the content for now but asked the defendants to reply to Sameer Wankhede’s request to remove the allegedly defamatory material from various websites.Wankhede sought Rs 2 crore in damages which he wants to be donated to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital for cancer patients.
“This series disseminates a misleading and negative portrayal of anti-drug enforcement agencies, thereby eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions,” the plea submitted. The petition claimed that the series was intentionally made to damage Sameer Wankhede’s reputation in a biased and unfair way, especially since the case involving him and Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan is still being heard in the Bombay High Court and the NDPS Special Court in Mumbai.
