Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has once again spoken out his views on who should lead the Indian team in the shortest format of the game. The former left-handed cricketer said that current skipper Kohli is not a bad captain but his deputy Rohit is better at the role.

“Virat Kohli is not a bad captain, but Rohit Sharma is a better captain. There is a vast difference between the quality of captaincy,” said Gambhir on the Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

“When we pick players for Indian team basis their IPL performance, then why can’t we pick IPL captains as Team India’s captain? So, then IPL shouldn’t be a parameter while judging the batting/bowling performances. So why do you pick players from IPL?” he added.

Gambhir, Cricketer turned politician had earlier asked for Rohit to be made the Indian captain when the latter had led Mumbai Indians to lift their fifth glory this year in the United Arab Emirates.

“If Rohit Sharma doesn’t become India’s captain, it’s their loss, not Rohit’s,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “Yes, a captain is only as good as his team and I completely agree with that, but what are the parameters to judge a captain on who is good and who isn’t? The parameters and benchmark should be the same. Rohit has led his team to five IPL titles,” he added.

Team India’s ‘split captaincy’ debate has sparked ever since Rohit Sharma led Mumbai to their fifth IPL title. Commentators and former cricketers have been weighing in on the debate, giving their views about the same. The debate doesn’t seem to end as Gambhir once again ignited the split captaincy debate.
