Uttar Pradesh Civic Elections 2017: BJP heads for big win, BSP gives a tough fight
The civic election of Uttar Pradesh has taken some expected and unexpected turn of events. As BJP played hard to win the elections, BSP has also given them the tough fight in the elections.
Mayawati, chief of Bahujan Samaj Party, was hit hard during the Uttar Pradesh assembly election by securing just 19 seats, which was enough to declare her innings in the political arena against the bigwigs. But what comes as a blow to BJP and the SP is the comeback of Mayawati in the Uttar Pradesh civic elections.
Mayawati-led outfit BSP has won the mayoral polls in Aligarh and is leading in Meerut. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party and the Congress were unable to bag a single mayoral seat.
Mayawati has managed to stand tall against the Modi wave in the civic polls at the second position. But what should be considered here is the Mayawati’s absence from the active politics and mere media reportage to her. Samajwadi Party, the second most influential party in the region, fails to secure a good section of seats in the civic polls.
The entire BSP campaign was low key. BSP seems to be picking up votes in areas with substantial Dalit population in western UP and Bundelkhand region.
The Dalit-Muslim combination seems to be working for the party this time around. BSP is leading in Aligarh, Agra, Meerut and Jhansi.
Counting of ballots polled in three phases on November 22, 26 and 29 was on under tight security cover and CCTV surveillance at 334 centres at district and tehsil headquarters, the state election commission said. Central paramilitary forces have been deployed around the counting centres. Arrangements have also been made for web casting of the counting process.
Mayawati securing good seats in the election is also seen is the comeback in the elections to follow.
