Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to inaugurate a historic milestone for Kolkata’s transportation landscape on March 6, as revealed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This landmark event marks the unveiling of India’s pioneering under-river metro tunnel in Kolkata, a testament to the city’s progressive infrastructural advancements. Vaishnaw underscored the remarkable strides achieved in the Kolkata Metro project over the past decade, in stark contrast to the sluggish progress of the preceding four decades.

This accelerated development is attributed to Prime Minister Modi’s visionary agenda aimed at fortifying India’s infrastructure, laying the groundwork for a thriving nation by 2047. At the heart of this accomplishment lies the under-river tunnel, a pivotal component of the East-West Metro corridor.

With this new section operational, Howrah is poised to emerge as the nation’s deepest metro station, nestled 32 to 33 meters beneath the earth’s surface. This transformative endeavor is poised to substantially slash travel times for passengers. Presently, Kolkata’s Green Line spans a modest distance of 6.97 kilometers between Sector V in the east and Phoolbagan.

However, with the introduction of this initiative, the train will traverse an extended route from Sector V to Howrah, coursing beneath the Hooghly River, in a mere 27 minutes.

Kolkata’s under-river metro tunnel

This engineering marvel, positioned beneath the Hooghly River, holds the distinction of being India’s maiden underwater river tunnel custom-crafted for metro rail operations. Stretching across 10.8 kilometers with a width of 5.5 meters, a 520-meter section of the tunnel traverses beneath the Hooghly River, with its apex approximately 30 meters below ground level. Commissioned in 2021, the tunnel is integral to the East-West Metro Line and was meticulously constructed by the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation. Anticipated to whisk commuters across the river in less than a minute, the metro train promises a distinctive voyage for passengers.
