Here is how Twitterati reacted to Rahul Gandhi’s address at UC Berkeley

Addressing the students at the University of California, Berkeley, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday spoke about issues varying from the dynastic politics to the 1984 riots. The Gandhi scion is on a two-week visit to the United States and is expected to hold interactions with global thinkers, political leaders and oversea Indian. Speaking on ‘India at 70: Reflections on the Path Forward’, while Gandhi spoke about contemporary India, he further criticized theruling Narendra Modi government over the newly introduced economic reforms and the ongoing unrest in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking on dynastic politics during question-answer session, Gandhi said that most of the country runs in a similar manner. Citing the examples of Akhilesh Yadav (son of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav), MK Stalin (son of former Tamil Nadu CM M Karunainidhi), Anurag Thakur (son of former Himachal Pradesh CM Prem Kumar Dhumal), Abhishek Bachchan (son of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan) and others, Rahul Gandhi stated that it’s not just him to be targeted at. Gandhi is the fifth generation of the Nehru-Gandhi family in politics, after his father Rajiv Gandhi, grandmother Indira Gandhi and great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru.

Further lashing out at the Modi government, Gandhi claimed that the Centre’s decision to implement demonetization has caused “tremendous damage” to the country’s economy. In strong words of criticism towards the sudden ban on currency notes, he said, “Millions of small businesses were simply wiped out as a result of the demonetisation, farmers and many who use cash were hit extremely hard. Agriculture is in deep distress and farmers’ suicides have skyrocketed across the country.” Also targeting the central government over the newly introduced Goods and Service Tax (GST) regime, Gandhi claimed that the “hastily applied” economic policy has also put tremendous pressure on the economy.
