‘Bawaal’ Review: A Bollywood Romance With Insensitive Historical Context
The movie follows Ajay ‘Ajju’ Dixit (Varun Dhawan), a man focused on his image, and his wife Nisha (Janhvi Kapoor). Ajju’s suspension from his teaching job prompts a trip to Europe, where he uses World War II locations to teach his students. However, the film becomes more about Ajju’s personal growth, with insensitive references to Holocaust and Auschwitz. The lack of chemistry between the leads and poorly written dialogues add to the film’s flaws. ‘Bawaal’ is criticized for using historical tragedy as a backdrop for a shallow narrative, making it one of the most tone-deaf and insensitive films in recent memory.
