Shame on Vijay Sethupathi’ is trending on Twitter as Muttiah Muralidharan biopic ‘800’ announcement got flak from a section over latter’s stand on civil war.
After biopics on Indian Cricketers Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Mohammad Azharuddin, makers have now planned to make a biopic on Muttiah Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in International Cricket and of the greatest bowlers to have played the game.
Vijay Sethupathi who will be seen playing Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan in the upcoming biopic 800 is being trolled mercilessly on social media. 800 was announced in July this year but the makers released the motion poster only a day ago. However, the upcoming biopic has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Netizens were displeased with Vijay Sethupathi for backing a film on Muralitharan, who has had a controversial stand over the decades-long civil war between the Sri Lanka Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE), that sought a separate state for the Tamils in the Sinhalese -majority country.
Netizens brought out the 48- year-old statement allegedly denying the ‘genocide’ of Tamils in the clashes that ended with the government’s victory in 2009.
For the unversed, Tamilians are not happy with Sethupathi opting for the Sri Lankan cricketers biopic due to a political reason. The Sri Lankan government, which is predominantly ruled by Sinhalese, has been known for oppressing Tamils in their country.
