Priyanka Chopra recalls wearing mangalsutra is too patriarchal, after dropping Jonas surname

Priyanka Chopra, our very own Desi girl, is one who does not shy away from opening about her personal life. She recently was in the news for dropping Nick Jonas’ last name from her Instagram handle.

Her move lead to divorce rumours but PeeCee handled it all gracefully. Today, she opened about wondering if wearing a mangalsutra was patriarchal at the time of her wedding.

Being a modern day woman, Priyanka shared that she knew that wearing a mangalsutra will come with a fair share of repercussions. She recalled thinking whether she liked the idea of wearing a mangalsutra, something worn by most married Indian women or whether it is the patriarchy taking the driver’s seat. PeeCee opened up about having these thoughts about wearing a mangalsutra post her marriage in a recent video for Bulgari.

The international brand has recently tapped into the Indian jewellery market by launching a collection of mangalsutras. Priyanka was seen promoting the collection in her video where she said: “I remember when I wore mine for the first time. because we have grown with the idea of what it means. It was just a very special moment for me.”

“At the same time, as a modern woman, I also understand the repercussions of what it means. Do I like the idea of wearing mangalsutra or is it too patriarchal? But at the same time, I am that generation that’s sort of in the middle. Maintain tradition but know who you are and what you stand for. And we’ll see the next generation of girls might do differently,” she further added.

“Take traditions forward by knowing who and what you stand for. I’m trying and learning everyday,” read a part of her caption.

On the work front, Priyanka will next be seen in Farhan Akhtar’s Jee Le Zara with Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt.
