April 19, 2022 (New Delhi): Hina Rabbani Khar, who once got a celebrity treatment during her first official visit to India, will take the helm as Pakistan’s junior foreign minister for the second time in the new 37-member cabinet unveiled by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday. However, Hina has been recently criticized by the citizens and politicians of Pakistan for taking over the ministry as a woman. She is the target of many misogynists and the patriarchal society of Pakistan. Hina was the youngest and first woman minister during her tenure as Pakistan’s minister of state for foreign affairs between February 2011 and March 2013. She has once again been appointed to the same position after her incredible work in the Pakistani Government.

It is eloquent that the strings of the Pakistani Government are being monitored from Rawalpindi. There have been recent remarks by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Qamar Javed Bajwa, which indicated that the military urged to steer Pakistan away from Imran Khan’s populist foreign policy toward the policy of the United States of America for normalizing the relationship with India. Earlier, Imran Khan’s PTI was inclined toward the populist policy giving much priority to China. Also she was one of the few ministers who evolved from the military government of General Pervez Musharraf to the civilian government. She also joined the Pakistan People’s Party just before the 2008 general election in the country.

As a Foreign Minister in her first tenure, Khar had been vocal in framing out innovative foreign policy that was based on improving relations with Pakistan’s neighbours Afghanistan and India. She has also been an advocate of reducing Pakistan’s dependence on the US. So far, as per reports, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced 34 members of his cabinet but has not yet named a new foreign minister but he has appointed Khar as a junior Foreign Minister. It would be interesting to see if her leadership roles and policies would make a ‘Naya Pakistan’ amid the male dominated patriarchal and misogynist society of Pakistan.
