The central government ordered 4 thousand army canteens of the country not to import foreign goods. It also includes expensive foreign liquor. The government has taken this decision with the aim of promoting local goods under the Self-Reliant India Campaign. The three armies were consulted in this regard before the verdict.
According to the news agency Reuters, there are about 4 thousand army canteens in the country. Items are available at discount rates. The present and ex-servicemen and their families benefit from it. Demand for foreign liquor and electronics goods is generally high. After the decision of the government, foreign goods will no longer be sold in the army canteen. They also include foreign liquor. The Army Canteen is one of the largest retail chains in the country. These are sold for about 200 crore rupees every year.
On October 19, the defense ministry issued an order banning the import of foreign goods. It said – Direct import could not be done. According to the order, this was discussed with the Army, Airforce, and Navy between May and July. This is a decision taken under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to promote domestic products. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense refused to say anything about this.
The order currently does not provide information about goods whose products will be banned. However, sources say that it contains foreign liquor. About 7% of the products sold in the canteen are imported. These include items imported from China such as diapers, vacuum cleaners, handbags and laptops. Two companies supplying foreign liquor were reduced in orders since June.
