FSSAI Suspends Fortune Dairy’s License After Human Finger Discovered in Ice Cream

On June 12, Brendan Ferrao, 26, lodged a complaint with the Malad police after discovering a human finger in an ice cream, prompting a case registration under sections 272, 273, and 336 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Yummo Ice Creams. Subsequent investigations revealed that the ice cream was manufactured at Fortune Dairy Industries Pvt Ltd in Indapur.

In response, officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted inspections at the Indapur and Hadapsar units on Friday. Suresh Annapure, joint commissioner of the FDA in the Pune region, confirmed that the central authorities, who issued the food license to Fortune Dairy, suspended the license following the incident. Although the Hadapsar unit was not involved in the incident, it was inspected as a precautionary measure for over 12 hours, with a notice being issued to the unit.

Sachin Jadhav, the owner of Fortune Dairy Industries Pvt Ltd, Indapur, claimed that the situation was a conspiracy aimed at tarnishing the brand’s reputation. He clarified that while the dairy’s license was temporarily suspended, the company was not sealed, and manufacturing activities had to be halted.

Jadhav highlighted that Fortune Dairy Industries, which began operations in 2020, processes over two lakh litres of milk daily, producing butter and skimmed milk powders. He also mentioned that Walko QSR Company Pvt Ltd, the owner of Yummo Ice Creams, outsources its ice cream manufacturing to units in Ghaziabad, Jaipur, and Gujarat, and that they started manufacturing for Yummo Ice Creams on September 19, 2023. Jadhav assured that they are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
