Big blow to anti-right wing parties: BJP to discuss Triple Talaq in the first Lok Sabha session

The first session of Lok Sabha will commence on Monday (17th June 2019), which would consider the passing of Union budget and some key legislations like Triple Talaq bill. The topic of ‘Triple talaq’ will gain the first position, in terms of importance, on the list of government based agendas. PM Modi organized an all-party meeting on Sunday with the aim of reaching out to the opposition. The meeting was connected to the idea of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas, Sabka Vishwas”.

Furthermore, PM Modi has invited the members of all parties, respectively on 19 June, for the discussion of “One nation, One election”. “The first session of the lower house of the Lok Sabha should begin with fresh zeal and new thinking”, said by PM Modi. He tweeted, “We had a fruitful all-party meeting today, the first one after the election results and before the start of the Monsoon Session.

Thankful to the leaders for their valuable suggestions. We all agreed on the smooth running of Parliament so that we can fulfill people’s aspirations.” The issue of “strengthening the federal structure”, was raised by TMC’s Derek O’Brien as he accused the central government of interfering in the state matters.”The issues like farmers distress, unemployment, press freedom, and drought, should be considered for the debate in the parliament”, opposition parties demanded on Sunday’s meeting.

The issue of the conduction of state elections in Jammu and Kashmir was raised by Congress. “There is a huge difference between the Lok Sabha elections and the state Assembly elections. There is a two to three years’ gap left of particular states, which are yet to complete their five-year term. How will this ‘One nation One election’ happen?”,Sanjay Singh(AAP Leader). “There will be a meeting on Wednesday where we will express our views. We will see how far is this ‘One nation one election’ concept realistic and practical.”,D Raja(Communist Party of India) told India TV.

Triple Talaq, also known as talaq-e-biddat, instant divorce, and talaq-e-mughallazah (irrevocable divorce), is a form of Islamic divorce which has been used by Muslims in India, especially adherents of Hanafi Sunni Islamic schools of jurisprudence. It allows any Muslim man to legally divorce his wife by stating the word talaq (the Arabic word for “divorce”) three times in oral, written, or more recently, electronic form.

The Modi Government formulated a bill called The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 and introduced it in the Parliament which was passed on 28 December 2017 by the Lok Sabha. The bill makes instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddah) in any form — spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS, and WhatsApp illegal and void, with up to three years in jail for the husband.

MPs from RJD, AIMIM, BJD, AIADMK, and IUML opposed the bill, calling it arbitrary in nature and a faulty proposal, while Congress supported the Bill tabled in the Lok Sabha by law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. The bill faced stiff resistance in the Rajya Sabha. Several Opposition lawmakers called for it to be sent to a select committee for close scrutiny. The bill was finally passed by Lok Sabha on 27th December 2018 with strong support.

Hence, It is good and vulnerable to see that the issue of “Tripe Talaq”, is given the peak importance in the first session of Lok Sabha and ironically it breaks the typical mindset of Modi haters, that “BJP does nothing for the Muslims”.
