AZERBAIJAN’S PRESIDENT APPOINTS HIS WIFE AS VICE PRESIDENT
Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev appointed his wife to serve as his deputy president. By this he is tightening the country’s leadership in his hands.
Ilham crowned his wife Mehriban Aliyeva as vice president of the country on Tuesday, taking the oil-rich country’s leadership in his family.
Mehriban, 52 is the head of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. She is also a member of parliament who is trained in medicine.
Ilham has been in power since October 2003. He won both the 2008 and 2013 elections with more than 85% of the vote.
In September, Mr. Aliyev organised a referendum which extended the presidential term to seven years from five.
