After Brijbhushan Sharan his young son Karan Bhushan will take charge as the WFI President?
Following the protest by the wrestlers, the Sports Ministry had on April 24 asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad-hoc committee and hold elections in 45 days. IOA formed an ad-hoc committee on 4th May. The committee can start the election process soon.
Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia have completed 30 days of protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. On 23 April, he started a Protest to remove Brijbhrishan Sharan Singh from the post of WFI President. Now the tenure of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is over. According to WFI sources, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh wants to make his younger son Karan Bhushan Singh the president of the federation.
If there is no consensus on Karan Bhushan Singh, then Satpal Singh Deshwal, who was the treasurer of the federation, could be the next president. Satpal Singh, a resident of Meerut, is the president of the Uttarakhand Wrestling Federation and a friend of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Former Olympian Jayprakash Gurjar’s name is also in this race. He is also considered close to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The office bearers of WFI are elected in the General Council meeting. The office bearers of the affiliated association from the federation cast their vote in the election. Each State Federation has a President and a Secretary, that is, two votes. There are two votes from Delhi and one vote each from the rest of the Union Territories.
Voting takes place only if there is more than one claimant for a post. Otherwise, the office bearers are elected unopposed. In 2019, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh became the president unopposed.
An election once in 4 years, a person can become president only 3 times:
WFI elections are held once in four years. A person cannot become president three times or for more than 12 years. Secretary General or Treasurer cannot hold office for more than two terms or 8 years.
