X Shuts Down Hundreds of Accounts Linked to Hamas, Declares Zero Tolerance for Terrorist Groups
Title: Social Media Platform Takes Swift Action After Hamas Attacks on Israel
Commitment to Public Safety
In response to recent attacks by Hamas on Israel, social media platform X has taken decisive steps to remove numerous accounts associated with the organization. CEO Linda Yaccarino emphasized the platform’s dedication to ensuring a safe and lawful online environment, especially during critical events. She stated, “There is no place on X for terrorist organizations or violent extremist groups.”
EU’s Ultimatum Spurs Rapid Response
European Union industry chief Thierry Breton issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Elon Musk, urging him to address the spread of misinformation on X. Breton expressed concerns about the platform’s potential role in disseminating unlawful content within the European Union. This ultimatum comes in the wake of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires major online platforms to take proactive measures against unlawful content.
Platform’s Pledge to Cooperation
Yaccarino affirmed that X promptly formed a leadership team to assess the situation. In a written communication to Breton, she expressed X’s willingness to engage in further discussions with the EU. The platform has already responded to over 80 takedown requests from the EU within the specified time frame and reported no notifications from Europol regarding illicit content.
