Absconding Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan was apprehended by the West Bengal Police in the Minakhan area of North 24 Parganas on February 29. According to Minakhan’s SDPO, Aminul Islam Khan, Shahjahan was promptly escorted to Basirhat Court following his arrest.

Security measures were heightened at Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court, where Shahjahan was scheduled to appear later in the day. West Bengal State president Sukanta Majumdar attributed Shahjahan’s arrest to the sustained agitation by the BJP and the women of Sandeshkhali, asserting that the government’s previous denial of the situation had been overturned.

He stated, “I had already said that we would compel the government to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan. Today, due to the agitation of the BJP and the women of Sandeshkhali, government and Mamata Banerjee are compelled to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan.”

The arrest followed a month-long evasion by Shahjahan from both state and central authorities. The Sandeshkhali region in North 24 Parganas had been witnessing widespread protests against Shahjahan and his associates, particularly from women accusing them of land-grabbing and sexual assault.

These allegations prompted Calcutta High Court Chief Justice to order Shahjahan’s addition to the Sandeshkhali case, ultimately leading to his arrest on February 29. The Court’s ruling stated, “There is no reason to not arrest him,” emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Notably, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) had previously conducted raids on several locations in West Bengal, including Shahjahan’s residences, in connection with the alleged land grabbing case.
