Watch: This robot in nightclub is mixing songs like no other human can

A club in Prague has decided that humans aren’t necessarily the most creative DJs they can employ. So what they’ve done is to employ a robot as well to keep the party going.

Called Karlovy Lazne, the club recently introduced a robot DJ in the form of a mechanical arm that’s largely used in the automotive industry. The robot alternates with a human DJ, programming music for the dancers through the night.

It’s been a few weeks since the robot has been on the job, with special software allowing it to choose songs, select CDs from a rack, and then insert them into the music system to play songs. It even dances to pump up the crowd too.

The arm is a modified version of a manufacturing robot made by a company called KUKA. It’s still unclear if the robot’s software just lets it perform the manual tasks of a DJ, or whether it also helps the bot program a playlist based on the genre, BPM, and popularity of two tracks.
Karlovy Lazne’s robot alternates an hour-long performance with a human DJ every night. But though some of the clubgoers love the novel idea, others aren’t quite so sure it’s such a great idea. “I don’t like the robot,” Marcia Lopes told Reuters. “It can’t feel what the people want to dance to.”
