A 52-year-old grandmother in Punjab is riding scooters to ferry passengers for Uber. Paramjeet Kaur joined Uber’s new bike taxi fleet to supplement her family income.
“I am quite sure that people will be nice to me and appreciate my hard work,” she told Hindustan Times in an interview.
Kaur, who reportedly lost her husband early in life, has brought up three children, and also has a car registered with the ride-hailing service. The feisty grandmother started using her scooter, which she has ridden for a decade, to pick up and drop passengers despite her family urging her to take it easy. She told the newspaper that her passengers have already commended her for taking the decision to become a bike taxi rider.
Dressed in a salwar kameez, the resident of Mohali gets paid for her rides on an hourly basis, and has a target of six rides a day. She is among the 100 new bike riders who joined Uber’s new fleet in Punjab as part of a partnership with the state government to generate more jobs.
