Supreme Court Orders Himachal to Release Excess Water, Directs Haryana to Ensure Flow to Delhi Amid Water Crisis

Amid a severe water shortage exacerbated by an ongoing heatwave in Delhi, the Supreme Court issued directives on Thursday to address the crisis. The Court ordered the Himachal Pradesh government to release excess water, ensuring prior notification is given to Haryana. Furthermore, Haryana was instructed to facilitate the unobstructed flow of this water to Delhi.

The Supreme Court mandated the Upper Yamuna River Board to monitor and measure the amount of water released by Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, the Delhi government was tasked with ensuring no wastage of this precious resource.

The Court’s directive specified that Himachal Pradesh should transfer 127 cusecs of water from upstream, ensuring its passage to the Hathnikund barrage and subsequently to Delhi via Wazirabad.

The order emphasized that when Himachal Pradesh releases surplus water with prior notice, Haryana must ensure its seamless flow from Hathnikund to Wazirabad, guaranteeing that Delhi residents receive adequate drinking water. These measures were prompted by the urgent plea from the Delhi government seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention to mitigate the escalating water crisis.
