Naples Earthquake Today: Strongest Tremor in 40 Years Shakes Campi Flegrei, Injures Four
A powerful magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei volcanic area west of Naples late Friday evening. It sent people pouring into the streets. Some buildings began to crumble.
The quake hit at 7:46 p.m. local time. Its epicentre was in Campi Flegrei, at a depth of about 3 km, according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
It’s the strongest tremor since the current phase of ground movement began around Pozzuoli. At least ten aftershocks followed, the biggest measuring around magnitude 2.6.
Residents across Naples and nearby towns felt a long, rolling motion that rattled windows and set off alarms. Video footage captured a hillside collapsing in the Girolamini area, with boulders crushing parked cars below. Power was cut in several neighbourhoods, including on the island of Procida. The tremor was also felt clearly on Ischia.
Injuries and Damage
- Four people were injured, according to Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci. All were treated and released; none were serious.
- No one was trapped, though checks continued through the night.
- Churches and older residential blocks took the worst visible damage.
- Train and metro services were suspended as a precaution.
- Fire crews reported only minor building damage and said they’d received no rescue requests.
Local officials — including the mayors of Pozzuoli and Bacoli — called emergency coordination meetings to assess the damage and support affected families.
Why Does Campi Flegrei Keep Shaking?
Campi Flegrei isn’t one volcano. It’s a caldera — a giant volcanic basin — bordering Naples. It formed from two massive eruptions roughly 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. Its last eruption was in 1538.
The area’s defining feature is bradyseism, literally “slow earthquake.” It’s a millennia-long cycle of ground rising and sinking. This slow movement has even submerged the ancient Roman town of Baia underwater.
Scientists believe the current unrest comes from one of two things (or both):
- Magma pushing up at shallow depth, or
- The underground hydrothermal system reacting to changing pressure and fluids
Researchers still debate exactly how these deep processes connect to what happens on the surface.
Is an Eruption Coming?
Not based on current data.
- Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi says there’s no eruptive risk right now — none of the monitoring indicators point to one.
- Italy’s volcanic risk commission has kept the alert at “yellow.” That means there’s evidence of deep magma driving the unrest, but no sign it’s actively rising to the surface.
Still, history offers a warning. Before the 1538 eruption, seismic activity and uplift built for about 100 years — with a sudden, localized spike just days before it happened. A major uplift episode in 1982–84 raised the ground by 1.8 metres and triggered over 16,000 earthquakes. That episode never led to an eruption.
A Crowded Danger Zone
The real risk isn’t just the volcano — it’s how many people live on top of it. Campi Flegrei is one of the most densely populated volcanic areas on Earth.
Italy has already declared urgent seismic-risk measures for the region. Quakes have been building for a while:

For context: a magnitude 6.9 quake killed about 2,700 people in Irpinia in 1980. A 2016 quake series killed around 300 in central Italy. Officials say Friday’s quake doesn’t come close to that scale — but it explains why authorities watch this caldera so closely.

Authorities are inspecting homes, churches, and public infrastructure across Pozzuoli, Bagnoli, and nearby towns. Train services should resume once checks are done. Civil Protection officials continue monitoring seismic and ground-movement data and are urging residents to stay alert for aftershocks.
