“Prime Minister Modi Engages Empowered Women from Sandeshkhali”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, held a poignant meeting with women who bravely came forward to recount their harrowing experiences of alleged sexual assault by suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan in Sandeshkhali.
Describing the encounter, sources within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) characterized Modi’s demeanor as that of a compassionate father figure, attentively listening to the victims’ accounts of trauma. Sandeshkhali, situated in North 24 Parganas, has been roiled by accusations against Shahjahan and his associates, ranging from sexual assault to land grabbing.
The arrest of the 40-year-old TMC leader, popularly known as ‘Bhai,’ followed by his six-year suspension from the party, further fueled tensions in the village. Prior to his rally in Barasat, PM Modi condemned the situation, criticizing Mamata Banerjee’s administration for allegedly shielding Shahjahan and his cohorts.
The prime minister’s remarks echoed the recent court orders, including the Calcutta High Court’s directive for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the attack on Enforcement Directorate officials by Shahjahan’s supporters.
The refusal of West Bengal CID to hand over Shahjahan to the CBI, coupled with the state government’s legal challenge in the Supreme Court, added to the political drama surrounding the case. Sandeshkhali’s turmoil has become a focal point of contention between the TMC and BJP, intensifying the political landscape ahead of the impending Lok Sabha elections.
