PM Modi Unveils India’s First Underwater Metro Route in Kolkata, Launches Projects Worth ₹15,400 Crore
As part of his 10-day tour to 12 states and union territories (UTs), Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of several projects worth ₹15,400 crore in Kolkata. On Wednesday, March 6 which includes the underwater metro service in Kolkata. He has travelled to West Bengal thrice in the last five days.
PM Modi Unveils Kolkata’s Underwater Metro
The Kavi Subhash, Majerhat, and Esplanade stations in Kolkata Metro; Kochi Metro; Agra Metro; Meerut-RRTS segment. And Pune Metro are among the metro train services that the Prime Minister announced. The underwater service is a segment of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor. Which would cross the Hooghly River 4.8 kilometres below ground. It is part of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section.
The metro service will link Salt Lake and Howrah, the twin cities of the state capital of West Bengal. There will be three subterranean stations among the six. In around 45 seconds, it is anticipated to speed through a 520-meter section beneath the Hooghly. Along with a number of schoolchildren, the prime minister rode the underwater metro for the first time. The landmark project was inaugurated less than a year after Kolkata Metro achieved a historic milestone by running a train through the underwater tunnel during trials in April 2023. Modi’s Kolkata Visit: Inaugurations, Hospital Visit, and Upcoming Rally

PM Modi will inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections in Kolkata, followed by a public rally in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district. Upon arriving in Kolkata on Tuesday evening, PM Modi visited the Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan. Where Ramakrishna Math and Mission president Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj is undergoing treatment. PM Modi expressed best wishes for Swami Smarananandaji’s health and recovery.
Two weeks had passed since Prime Minister Modi’s previous visit to West Bengal, where he had spoken at mass rallies in the districts of Arambagh in Hooghly and Krishnanagar in Nadia.
