Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari passed away due to a cardiac arrest at Banda Medical College in Uttar Pradesh. Ansari, who had been incarcerated in Banda jail, was rushed to the medical facility after being found unconscious. Despite efforts by a team of doctors, Ansari couldn’t be revived and succumbed to the cardiac arrest, as per a medical bulletin.
Allegations of “slow poisoning” surfaced when Ansari’s family claimed that he was being administered harmful substances in his food while in jail. This suspicion arose after Ansari complained of abdominal pain and constipation, prompting his hospitalization. His brother, Afzal Ansari, an MP from Ghazipur, asserted that Mukhtar had been poisoned on multiple occasions, exacerbating his health condition.
The Uttar Pradesh prison department refuted these claims, stating that Ansari received prompt medical attention after experiencing health complications in jail. However, the controversy surrounding Ansari’s treatment in custody has reignited concerns about his safety, with his family previously expressing fears of a staged encounter.
Ansari’s demise comes amid a long history of legal troubles, with over 60 criminal cases, including charges of land grabbing, extortion, and murder. Notably, he was convicted in several cases, including the high-profile kidnapping and murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, for which he received a 10-year sentence. Additionally, he was recently handed a life term for using forged documents to obtain an arms license in 1990.
Following Ansari’s death, security measures have been heightened across Uttar Pradesh, with prohibitory orders imposed to prevent any potential unrest. Special police deployments have been arranged in districts linked to Ansari’s political influence, such as Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi, to maintain order in the wake of his passing.
