Kamal Haasan clears speculation on joining TN politics, signals to launch new party
Speaking in an interview with The Quint, the veteran actor discussed his plans to launch his own party, however stating that it is “not out of choice but compulsion”.
After much speculation, veteran Tamil actor Kamal Haasan has finally given the biggest hint towards his entry into Tamil Nadu’s political space. Recently, Haasan had been on the headlines in connection with the states politics, sparking controversies with his meeting with the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and for attending the anniversary event of DMK’s newspaper.
Speaking in an interview with The Quint, the veteran actor discussed his plans to launch his own party, however stating that it is “not out of choice but compulsion”. Justifying his stand to not join any existing political party in Tamil Nadu, Haasan said, “Yes I am thinking on those lines, not out of choice but compulsion. A political party is about an ideology. And I don’t think my goals in politics can match the ideology of any political party.”
Boldly criticizing the corruption in politics, Haasan told The Quint, “Either I go or corruption in politics goes. We can’t have both. Don’t vote me in and then wait for five years to vote me out. Sack me immediately if I don’t deliver.”
Haasan also commented on the present scenario of TN politics. On Sasikala’s ouster and the fresh alliance between Edappadi K Palaniswami and O Pannerselvam, he said, “The ouster of Sasikala is a solid step forward. I was extremely vocal about getting rid of her. Now that it has happened, I feel a little more encouraged in my belief that the politics of Tamil Nadu can change.”
While questioned about his late entry into politics, Haasan replied, “This is the right time for me to come into active politics because everything that can go wrong is going wrong.”
Days back, after meeting the Kerala CM, Haasan declared that saffron is not his color, thereby hinting his opposition towards the right-wing parties. When asked whether his political inclination is towards the Left or Right, Haasan told reporters, “My colour is definitely not saffron. That much I can say now.”
