On Saturday, Raj Singh a Sikh musician who was part of a Sikh kirtan group, was shot dead outside a gurdwara at Selma in the US state of Alabama. Raj Singh aka Goldy, who resided in Tanda Sahuwala village in Bijnor district in UP, was a ragi who was with his musical group for one and a half years.

He was standing outside the gurdwara when an unidentified assaulter shot him in the abdomen. His family received the news of his death on Sunday morning.

In an interview with TOI, Gurdeep Singh, the deceased brother-in-law said, “We were informed about the incident by relatives and there has been five days, and the postmortem is yet to be done. We have even reached out to the Gurdwara committee for more information about the incident, and they are helping us. We have also appealed to our government for help, justice, and arrest of the killers.”

However, Goldy’s family believes that his killing could be the case of hate crime, even though the precise motive behind the killing of Singh is still unknown.

Selma police have asserted that there is no evidence indicating a racial motivation behind the tragic killing of Raj Singh outside a Gurdwara. This assertion was made by Sergeant Caleb Garcia in a statement reported by the Selma-based news outlet GVWire.

As per the reports, this is the second murder of an Indian origin in the US state in February. Earlier last month, Pravin Raojibhai (76) an American hotelier of Indian origin was shot dead after a confrontation with a man asking for a room in his motel in Sheffield, Alabama.

Another case where a Kerala student, Neil Kumar, was shot dead at point-blank range in Alabama as assailants tried to rob him. When families lose children like Goldy, Neil, or Pravin the only question that arises is will their parents get justice, or are Indian students or workers safe?

Goldy left behind his mother, two sisters, and a younger brother and was the sole provider for his family after his father’s death. His family has urged the government to help bring his body back to India for cremation.
