Tragedy struck on Monday, March 4th, as Nibin Maxwell, a 31-year-old Indian national hailing from Kerala, met his untimely demise in a devastating anti-tank missile strike near the Israel-Lebanon border in northern Israel.

Alongside Maxwell, two fellow Keralites, Paul Melvin and Bush Joseph George, both hailing from Idukki, suffered injuries as the missile mercilessly struck a moshav, an agricultural community, on that fateful afternoon. The incident has left a deep wound not only on the families of the victims but also on the Indian community as a whole, marking a somber reminder of the unpredictable perils that often accompany life in conflict-ridden regions.

Who is Nibin Maxwell?

Originally hailing from Kerala, Nibin Maxwell had embarked on a journey seeking better opportunities abroad. After working with a manpower supply firm in the UAE, he decided to seize the chance for a fresh start in Israel when the country opened its doors to Indian workers through agricultural visas.

Just two months into his relocation, tragedy struck in the form of an anti-tank missile strike, claiming Maxwell’s life. His decision to move was driven by a desire to support his family back home, which included his pregnant wife and their five-year-old child.

Facilitated by his brother-in-law, who worked in Israel, Maxwell’s move was also followed by his brother Nivin, both hopeful for brighter prospects in the agricultural sector. Despite the promising opportunities they envisioned, Maxwell’s aspirations were cruelly cut short by the cowardly act of terrorism perpetrated by Hezbollah. His family, grappling with the devastating loss, recalled how Maxwell had shared concerns about nearby airstrikes just weeks before his tragic demise.

In response to his untimely death, the Israeli embassy in India condemned the attack and extended heartfelt condolences to Maxwell’s grieving family. Israel’s ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, personally reached out to Maxwell’s brother, offering unwavering support during this challenging period of mourning.
