IIT Kharagpur Re-designs Syllabus. Introduces Vastu Shastra In Architecture
It has become a point of hot debate as soon as the news broke out that India’s oldest IIT is going to introduce Vastu Shashtra In Architecture from the next session. The IIT faculty of architecture in their efforts to introduce Vastu Shashtra had to re-orient their teaching-learning module.
You cannot be a “well-rounded architect” unless you have learnt the basics of Vastu Shastra — the foundation on which traditional Indian architecture study rests, believes IIT Kharagpur. The country’s largest IIT will introduce the essentials to first and second-year undergraduate architecture students this August, while those pursuing post-graduation or research scholars in infrastructure will get a detailed grounding on the subject.
As a matter of fact, Vastu Shashtra Has nothing to do with a particular religion. The roots of Vastu Shashtra lies deep down in the history of Indian model of Architecture.
According to the faculty of IIT Kharagpur, since students are being taught concepts prevalent in the West, there is no reason why they shouldn’t be conversant with ancient Indian architectural traditions. Nothing wrong with it, right?
As long as the traces of Vastu Shashtra is found in the earliest civilisations of India and its scientific justification can also be counted on, this decision should not be opposed from any corner.
Vastu Shastra has its beginnings in Rig Veda and is scientific in its tenor. Today, the whole world is looking at a green living, thanks to the way we are suffering due to erratic concretization. The concept of Vastu revolves around the healthy relationship of nature and infrastructure, hence its modern relevance,” Joy Sen, one of the faculties of IIT Kharagpur was quoted as saying.
