Four Indian Medical Students Tragically Drown in Russia
Four Indian medical students tragically lost their lives in a devastating incident near St. Petersburg, Russia, as they drowned in a river. The Indian missions in Russia immediately initiated coordination with local authorities to facilitate the repatriation of their bodies to their grieving families.
The victims, two boys and two girls aged between 18 and 20, were enrolled at Novgorod State University in the city of Veliky Novgorod. Reports from local media outlets detailed that a female Indian student encountered difficulty while wading in the river Volkhov, prompting her four companions to rush to her aid.
Tragically, in their valiant attempt to rescue their friend, three of the students also succumbed to the river’s currents. Fortunately, local bystanders managed to pull another boy to safety.
The Embassy of India in Moscow promptly issued a statement, affirming their commitment to expeditiously repatriating the bodies to their respective families. Additionally, they assured that the surviving student received necessary medical attention and support.
Expressing profound grief, the Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased students. They confirmed that the students were pursuing medical education at Veliky Novgorod State University. The Consulate General, in collaboration with local authorities, diligently worked to ensure the swift transfer of the mortal remains to the families.
Furthermore, they reached out to the bereaved families, offering assurance of comprehensive assistance during this challenging time. This tragic incident underscores the importance of providing support and solidarity to those affected by unforeseen tragedies, both domestically and internationally.
