Every year the festival of Dhanteras is celebrated on the Trayodashi date of Kartik Krishna Paksha. On this date Lord Dhanvantari appeared with a golden pot. Besides, the birth anniversary of Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, is also celebrated on the day of Trayodashi. This year, today i.e. on 10th November is Dhanteras. Purchasing new things has special significance on Dhanteras. There is a belief that whoever makes purchases on Dhanteras brings happiness and prosperity to his home. It is believed that items purchased on the day of Dhanteras provide auspicious results for many years. It is considered good to do shopping during auspicious time on Dhanteras. According to the Panchang, the auspicious time for shopping is from 12:35 pm on Dhanteras day i.e. 10th November till the morning of the next day i.e. 11th November.

Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber are worshiped on the holy festival of Dhanteras. The auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras will be from 05:47 pm to 07:47 pm on Friday, November 10.

Apart from gold and silver, it is auspicious to buy utensils, vehicles and Kuber Yantra on the day of Dhanteras.
Apart from this, buying a broom is also considered good. It is believed that buying a broom on this day brings blessings to Goddess Lakshmi.
On the other hand, if you are not able to buy any expensive item on the day of Dhanteras, then definitely bring home whole coriander.

What not to buy:

It is not considered auspicious to bring home iron or items made of iron on this day. According to astrology, if you bring home any item made of iron on the day of Dhanteras, then bad luck enters the house.
Do not buy aluminum or steel items on Dhanteras. It is believed that buying utensils or any other item made of steel or aluminum makes Goddess Lakshmi angry. 
According to astrology, if you bring any plastic item into the house on the day of Dhanteras, it can reduce the stability of wealth and blessings, hence do not buy plastic items on the day of Dhanteras.
On the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, one should not buy glass or glass items at all.
