By Anshika Khera

Prem Chopra, born on 23 September 1935 in Lahore (now in Pakistan), is a legendary Indian actor best known for his iconic villainous roles in Hindi cinema. With a career spanning over five decades, he appeared in more than 380 films, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
After completing his education in Shimla, Chopra pursued his passion for acting and made his film debut with Hum Hindustani (1960). However, his breakthrough came with the film Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), and soon he became the quintessential on-screen antagonist of Bollywood. His signature dialogue, “Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra,” became one of the most memorable lines in Indian film history.
Prem Chopra was admired for his suave yet menacing style, bringing depth and charisma to negative roles. Unlike stereotypical villains, he infused charm into his characters, making them unforgettable. He shared screen space with all the leading stars of his era, from Raj Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna to Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra.
Beyond films, Chopra is respected for his humility and gentlemanly nature in real life, contrasting sharply with his reel persona. Honored with numerous awards for his contribution to cinema, Prem Chopra remains an enduring figure in Bollywood’s golden legacy.
