By Amit Kumar

Bhagwan Das (1869–1958), a distinguished Indian philosopher, freedom fighter, and educationist, is remembered today on his death anniversary for his lifelong devotion to learning and public service.
Born in Varanasi, Das showed academic brilliance from an early age. He became a key figure in the Theosophical Society, closely collaborating with Annie Besant . Das authored numerous books in Sanskrit and Hindi, promoting Indian thought and social unity.
His involvement in India’s freedom movement saw him join the Indian National Congress and advocate non-violent methods of resistance, leading to brief imprisonment.
In 1955, Bhagwan Das was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, recognizing his influence on literature and education. Streets, hostels, and a postage stamp immortalize his legacy in modern India.
