Facebook is facing new controversy on both sides of the Atlantic which says that it has been receiving highly personal data of the users from third-party apps.
The controversy comes after the chief executive of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg was criticised for meeting the cultural secretary, Jeremy Wright, after refusing to appear before an influential parliamentary committee in Westminster.
On Friday, a Wall Street Journal investigation found that Facebook receives personal information and data of people. In some cases people who did not had accounts in Facebook were also in the list whose personal information was with Facebook.
These data included the Flo Period and Ovulation Tracker, which shared the information of when the user is having or not having periods or when the user is getting pregnant. While asking Facebook, it said that the information was shared with it and “Facebook was provided with the information and it strictly prohibits app developers from sending us sensitive data”.
New York’s governor Andrew Cuomo clearly called it as an invasion of consumer privacy and has ordered his departments of State and financial services to “immediately investigate” the case.
Labour MP Ian Lucas, a member of the committee said, “I would like to meet Mark Zuckerberg, but not for a chat – to ask real questions about all the issues we have raised”.
Criticism for facebook’s attitude towards its users’ privacy was questioned last year also. Meanwhile, documents were posted online on Friday which has raised further questions.
To all this controversy Facebook responded in a statement: “Like the other documents that were cherry picked and released in violation of a court order last year, these tell only one side of the story and omits the important content”.
