The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday announced Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as
the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election.
A senior leader hailing from Tamil Nadu, CP Radhakrishnan has an extensive political career. He has
previously served as Governor of Jharkhand, held additional charge of Pondicherry, represented
Coimbatore as a Member of Parliament for two terms, and led the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit.
Following a meeting of the NDA parliamentary party, BJP president JP Nadda stated, “Mr.
Radhakrishnan has four decades of political experience and has worn many hats. We hope the Vice
President’s election will be through consensus. We have already spoken to several parties, and while
the opposition said they would decide after our announcement, we are hopeful of wider support.”
The Vice Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, underway due to the resignation of
Jagdeep Dhankhar.
With the NDA commanding 422 members in Parliament—comprising 293 in the Lok Sabha and 129
in the Rajya Sabha—against the majority mark of 394, CP Radhakrishnan is widely seen as the
frontrunner poised for victory
