QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT DAY : STEP TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE

By Anshika Khera

Every year, 8th August is observed as Quit India Movement Day across India, marking one of the most powerful milestones in the country’s struggle for independence. Launched by Mahatma Gandhi on 8th August 1942 at the All India Congress Committee session in Bombay (now Mumbai), the movement gave a clarion call: “Do or Die” a message that galvanized millions of Indians to rise against British colonial rule.

On the evening of 8th August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi delivered his iconic speech at Gowalia Tank Maidan (now August Kranti Maidan) in Mumbai, urging Indians to “Quit India” and declared:

“Here is a mantra, a short one, that I give you. You may imprint it on your hearts and let every breath of yours give expression to it. The mantra is: Do or Die.”

Within hours of the speech, almost all top leaders of the Congress including Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Maulana Azad were arrested by the British. However, the movement quickly spread across the country.

Although the movement was eventually suppressed, it marked a turning point in India’s freedom struggle. It demonstrated the collective resolve of the Indian people and exposed the waning moral and political authority of British rule in India. The Quit India Movement created a new wave of nationalism that ultimately led to India’s independence on 15th August 1947.

The Quit India Movement was not just a protest it was a national awakening. As we commemorate Quit India Movement Day, let us remember that the freedom we enjoy today is the result of unyielding determination, sacrifice, and collective action. It is our responsibility to honor that legacy by upholding democratic values and working for a better, more inclusive India.
