18 children died after drinking cough syrup, can cough medicine overdose kill…

29 December 2022 ( New Delhi ) : Uzbekistan’s health ministry said on Tuesday that 18 children with acute respiratory illness have died after taking an overdose of a cough syrup, Doc-1 Max, manufactured by an Indian firm Marion Biotech .Marion Biotech Pharma Company has banned the manufacture of syrup after the case of death of 18 children in Uzbekistan. At the same time, the statement of Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has come to the fore. He said that we regret the deaths, but the government is probing the cause of death. The reason will be clear after the report.

The children consumed an “excessive amount” of cough syrup, which contains ethylene glycol, a substance that should not be present in cough syrup. This comes days after a parliamentary panel in The Gambia found “unacceptable levels” of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol in cough syrup made by Haryana-based Maiden Pharma. Here, cough syrup was linked to an instance of acute kidney injury, which is believed to be responsible for the deaths of at least 63 children.

According to local media reports, chemical ethylene glycol was found in the cough syrup during the lab test. This is the same chemical found in cough syrup and it has been said to be poisonous. In the past also, the same chemical was found in cough syrup in the death of children in Gambia after drinking cough syrup. Another Indian company – Haryana-based Maiden Pharma – is under investigation for cough syrup containing the same chemical. There were 70 deaths from Maiden’s cough syrup in Gambia, but this could not be clarified in the investigation.

AK Jain, Deputy Commissioner, Drugs Controlling and Licensing Authority, Uttar Pradesh, said, at present, no more information has been given regarding the investigation. Tuesday of Manufacturing Unit .The investigation was not done till late night.

Hassan Harris, legal head of Marion Biotech Pharma Company, said that the manufacture of cough syrup has been stopped and assured to take action as per the report. He said, we regret the death and the investigation is being done by the government. According to the report, the children were admitted to the hospital due to severe respiratory illness.
