Zakir Khan: The ‘Sakht Launda’ Who Redefined Indian Stand-Up Comedy
By Amit Kumar

August 20 marks the birthday of Zakir Khan, one of India’s most beloved stand-up comedians,
writers, poets, and actors. Born in 1987 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Zakir has become a defining
voice of contemporary Indian comedy with his unique style, relatable humor, and memorable
catchphrase, “Sakht Launda” — meaning a tough guy who shows immense self-control.
Zakir hails from a Rajasthani Muslim family of classical musicians. He is the grandson of Ustad
Moinuddin Khan, a celebrated sarangi maestro. Zakir completed his schooling in Indore and later
spent much of his adult life in Delhi. Early on, he showed an interest in arts but eventually found
his true calling in stand-up comedy.
His big break came in 2012 when he won Comedy Central India’s competition “India’s Best Stand
Up Comedian,” propelling him to national recognition. Zakir’s comedy is rooted in storytelling,
often revolving around everyday Indian experiences, relationships, and personal growth, which
resonates deeply with audiences, especially younger generations.
Zakir has released several hour-long comedy specials on Amazon Prime Video, including Haq Se
Single (2017), Kaksha Gyarvi (2018), Tathastu (2022), Mannpasand (2023), and Delulu
Express (2025). His popular Amazon web series Chacha Vidhayak Hai Humare further showcases
his talent as a writer and actor.
A landmark moment in Zakir’s career arrived in August 2025 when he became the first Indian
stand-up comedian to perform a full Hindi-language show at New York’s iconic Madison Square
Garden, performing to a sold-out audience.
With over 5 million subscribers on YouTube and sold-out shows across the globe, Zakir Khan
continues to touch hearts through humor, inspiring a new generation.
