Cyclist On Mahajan of Nasik will be turning 18 next month, but he has already broken the record for the fastest bicycle journey across India.

Om Mahajan a resident of Nasik in Maharashtra covered the distance of 3,600 km from Srinagar to Kanyakumari on a bicycle in eight days, seven hours and 38 minutes finishing on Saturday.

“I was always into cycling, but it was more about sprinting. I began to dream of endurance cycling and taking part in the Race Across America (RAAM) after the lockdown began,” Om said, speaking minutes after reaching Kanyakumari.

Om Mahajan said that six months ago, he started training for a qualifier for RAAM which was to be held in November. But instead of the 600 km qualifier, OM decided to do Race across India. He completed the journey to Kanyakumari starting with a cold night in Srinagar past week.

You will be amazed to know that his uncle Mahendra Mahajan had the fastest cycling record from Srinagar to Kanyakumari. But recently, Lt. Col. Bharat Pannu of the Indian army broke this record by completing this distance in eight days and nine hours.

Though it was yet to be included in the Guinness Book, Om Mahajan kept an eye on Pannu and broke it. Lieutenant Colonel Pannu was at the forefront of congratulating 17-year-old Om Mahajan on social media.

Om’s Father Hitendra and uncle Mahendra had won the RAAM as a team of two in 2015. They also hold a record for the fastest ride along the Golden Quadrilateral.

Om Mahajan’s next challenge is RAAM, often described as the toughest cycle race on the planet. To finish the successfully OM will have to ride 4,800 km within 12 days.
