WORLD ANIMAL DAY : THE LOYAL CREATURES

By Anshika Khera

World Animal Day is celebrated every year on October 4th to raise awareness about the importance of animals and to promote their welfare. The day also honors Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, whose feast falls on the same date.

The celebration began in 1931 in Florence, Italy, at a convention of ecologists. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide movement that encourages people to treat animals with respect and compassion. It reminds us that animals are an important part of our lives and the environment, and they deserve care and protection.

On this day, many organizations hold activities such as adoption drives, fundraising for animal shelters, awareness programs, and campaigns to protect endangered species. Some places even organize blessings for pets in memory of Saint Francis. Schools and communities often participate to spread the message of kindness toward animals.

World Animal Day is significant because it highlights the problems faced by animals—such as cruelty, neglect, habitat loss, and illegal hunting. By supporting shelters, adopting pets, avoiding animal-tested products, and spreading awareness, everyone can make a difference.

This day reminds us that protecting animals means protecting nature and ensuring a better future for all.
