Remembering the Brave: India Marks 26 Years of Kargil Vijay Diwas

By Amit Kumar

Today, India solemnly observes the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day that commemorates
the valour and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces during the 1999 Kargil War. Celebrated every year
on July 26, this day marks India’s hard-fought victory over Pakistan in the high-altitude conflict that
unfolded in the rugged mountains of Kargil district, Ladakh.

The conflict, codenamed Operation Vijay, was launched in response to a large-scale infiltration by
Pakistani soldiers and paramilitary forces, disguised as Kashmiri militants, into Indian territory along
the Line of Control (LoC). The plan, known on the Pakistani side as Operation Badri, aimed to sever
the strategic link between Kashmir and Ladakh and pressure India into negotiating on Kashmir.
However, Pakistan’s initial denial of involvement was later contradicted by documents found on
casualties, captured soldiers’ testimonies, and public statements by its own leadership.

The war, which lasted from May to July 1999, saw intense fighting in treacherous terrain at altitudes
above 16,000 feet. Despite the harsh conditions and the surprise element of the Pakistani operation,
the Indian Army swiftly mobilized nearly 200,000 troops. With unyielding courage, they reclaimed
the infiltrated positions, forcing Pakistani forces to retreat. The conflict officially ended on July 26,
1999, with India regaining full control of the territory, an event now etched in the national
consciousness as Kargil Vijay Diwas.

From schools to war memorials, and from government offices to homes of veterans, the entire
country is united in remembering the indomitable spirit of the soldiers. Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a
reminder of the price of peace and the bravery of those who defend it, against all odds, and at any
cost.

As we honour their memory, we also renew our commitment to the values they fought for: courage,
unity, and the sovereignty of our nation.
