By Abhishek Kumar

Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The announcement came on 27 August 2025, ending his long and successful journey in the tournament.

Ashwin shared his decision on social media. He wrote that every ending is a new beginning. His time as an IPL cricketer has come to an end but now he is ready to explore cricket in different leagues around the world. He also thanked the BCCI, IPL, franchises, teammates and fans for supporting him throughout his career.
Ashwin started his IPL journey with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was an important part of their title-winning seasons. Later he also played for Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals. He returned to CSK and finished his IPL career with the same team. In total Ashwin played 221 matches and took 187 wickets which makes him one of the leading wicket-takers in IPL history.

The 38-year-old spinner had already retired from international cricket in December 2024. Now after leaving the IPL he plans to play in foreign leagues. Reports say Ashwin may take part in The Hundred in England and could become the first Indian male player to play in that competition.
His retirement news created many reactions. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra praised Ashwin for starting a new journey while Kris Srikkanth said that Ashwin still had the fitness to play two more seasons in the IPL.

Ashwin’s exit marks the end of a golden chapter in the IPL but his fans will continue to see him on the cricket field as he begins a new career in overseas leagues.
