Ramoji Rao, Media Mogul and Founder of Eenadu Group, Passes Away at 87; Condolences Pour in from President Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, and Dignitaries

Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, the eminent figure behind the Telugu news and entertainment network ETV and the visionary founder of Ramoji Film City, passed away at the age of 87 in Hyderabad on Saturday morning. He had been undergoing treatment for several days and breathed his last at 4:50 am, as confirmed by ETV Telangana, one of the channels under the Ramoji Group.

Rao, a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan award, was widely acclaimed for establishing the Ramoji Group, which notably encompasses the sprawling production hub, Ramoji Film City, situated in the heart of Telangana’s capital. His mortal remains have been moved to his residence within the Film City premises. Born on November 16, 1936, Rao’s legacy extends beyond pioneering the prominent Telugu daily newspaper Eenadu in 1974; he also made significant contributions to the film industry, backing around 50 films and telefilms as a producer. Following the news of his demise, tributes poured in from various quarters.

President Droupadi Murmu hailed him as a “titan of the media and entertainment sector,” lauding his innovative ventures and societal vision. PM-designate Narendra Modi recognized Rao’s visionary contributions to Indian media, remarking on his profound impact on journalism and filmmaking. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi acknowledged Rao’s transformative role in the media landscape, highlighting his lasting influence on journalism and entertainment.

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy credited Rao with enhancing the credibility of Telugu journalism and industry, expressing deep condolences to his family. Andhra Pradesh CM-designate Chandrababu Naidu mourned Rao’s demise, reminiscing about their longstanding association and praising Rao’s unwavering commitment to truth and excellence.

Senior BJP leader G. Kishan Reddy also expressed sadness at Rao’s passing, commending his remarkable contributions to Telugu media and journalism. Cherukuri Ramoji Rao’s legacy as a pioneering force in media and entertainment reverberates deeply, leaving an indelible mark on the industry he so passionately served.
