On This Day: Today 160-years ago IPC was constituted – Know More

IPC i.e. Indian Penal Code was passed in 1860 on 6 October. It was implemented from January 1, 1861. From murder to rape and from theft to defamation, the punishment for every crime will be fixed.

In 1837, the first Law Commission headed by Thomas Macaulay drafted the Indian Penal Code. Barnes Peacock made the necessary reforms in the draft and was passed by members of the Legislative Council. Peacock later also became the first Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. At that time, there was a slave and mentor mentality in the minds of those who created the IPC.

Because of this many sections like treason is still disputed today. Since 1860, several sections of the IPC have been replaced. There have been amendments many times, many crimes related to dowry killing and many crimes have also taken place. It can also be called the most dynamic of Indian laws, many sections of which were removed even after the intervention of the courts.
